Volunteer Work Abroad - Deaf School

  GENERAL INFORMATION:
This project is about an association for deaf people they have a small mixed-gender school for deaf students. There are about 100 students, classified in 5 levels, from 6 to 15 years old and they also do workshops for people from 15 to 25 years old. There are 15 to 20 students per class, and 10 teachers. They also do workshops for children and adults.

You can be a class assistant of math, literature, sciences, history, sports, and also in the workshops: cooking, dressmaking, cosmetology, and carpentry.

Sometimes there will be local volunteers from universities.
 
     
  Objectives:
  • To develop an important project of work training in Santa Cruz, in order to give to deaf people with low resources the facilities and tools to be able to get a job and integrate them to society.
  • To get as much international cooperation as possible for the programs of early detection of skills and abilities of deaf people so they can have a proper rehabilitation.
  • To build educational programs for deaf people and to include in these programs some technical areas and specialties.
  • To get agreements with public and private organizations and companies so they can contribute to insert deaf people to work according to their specialties, skills and ability.
  • To diffuse the benefits of exchanging knowledge by attending to seminars and courses.
  • To promote any other activities and programs dedicated to improve the above objectives.
 
     
  MAIN SERVICES:

I. Assistance:
I.1. - Training Project: They have built a plan to help and train, for the benefit of deaf people with low resources that are still more discriminated because of their economical condition.

I.2. - Help and international cooperation: They have agreements with local and international organizations that cooperate with the following projects:
  • Audiphones Bank for deaf people with low resources.
  • Professionals training in several specialties.
  • Scholarships abroad for professionals of several areas that give them the opportunity of exchanging knowledge and then transmit their new knowledge to their colleagues once they return.
II Education:
II.1 Annual Education program: They have an annual program that includes the following courses:
  • Carpentry
  • Cosmetology
  • Dress making
  • Cooking
II.2 Scholarship program to deaf people with very low resources.

III. Sensitizing:
III. 1 Sensitizing events: They organize events to diffuse that deafness is a disability that concerns to society. Through those events they try to reach of the next objectives:
  • To diffuse that deafness is a disability that may affect anyone's family.
  • To diffuse prevention actions to deafness.
 
     
  List of Volunteer Work activities:
  • To organize workshops for the students such as handcrafts, cooking, etc.
  • To work as a class assistant helping the teacher to follow their plan of study and class activities of math, literature, sciences, history, sports, and also in the workshops: cooking, dressmaking, cosmetology, and carpentry.
  • Volunteers that are sports fans can organize soccer and basketball tournaments, and games.
  • For those volunteers with previous experience, professional volunteers of medicine can do seminar about health topics.
